Transmission Gully – Opus (Nov 2007 onwards)
Transmission Gully is the biggest road
construction challenge in the Wellington region. The aim is to relocate State Highway One away from
its narrow coastal route to a new inland route with sufficient room.
Project scope
Griffiths Drilling were invited by Opus International Consultants Ltd to join the team carrying out
the preliminary geotechnical investigations. Two track mounted rigs have been deployed to carry out
the programme of fully cored holes.
Complicating factors and solutions
Limited access and steep terrain.
Helicopter access
The third rig which is a helicopter portable unit, will be used to reach bore locations high up on
the hillside that are only accessible by air.
