Some useful information about water bores

Groundwater is mostly the result of some of the rainfall in the hydrologic cycle being absorbed by the ground (recharge). The amount of water that may exist is governed by the porosity and permeability of ground material. The geological history and the forming of the landscape, current topography, recharge rates and water use all influence the existence, or not, of groundwater.
Aquifers may be unconfined (water table) or artesian (confined) depending on the recharge point and the strata surrounding the aquifer.

Consent for water bores

Before water bore drilling can commence you must obtain Resource Consent for your bore from the Regional Council. Contact them directly to discuss your plans or visit their website which has the necessary forms and information to apply for the consents needed.
Once you receive the documents you are welcome to contact us so we can answer any questions you may have. Prior to mobilisation, we need you to provide us with a copy of the consent, including the specified conditions.

Water Bore Casing

Casing is a strong pipe used to prevent the borehole collapsing and provides a barrier to prevent surface contaminants entering the aquifer. On completion of the bore the top of the casing will sit above ground level. For domestic and stock water situations we use 125mm (5 inch) well casing.

Well Screen

Generally, to maximise the collection area available, a slotted screen is used to increase the intake area of the water bore. The slot size is designed to minimise the entry of solids into the well. The well screen fits inside the casing and the casing is pulled back to expose the slotted area.

Water Bore Development

This is done to clear any silt / sand from the material surrounding the well screen in the hole to ensure clean water and increase permeability of the water bearing area. Development time will depend on the conditions encountered.

Pump Testing

The pump test is a preliminary test to determine if the required quantity of water is available from the bore. It is also done to monitor the water level after an extended period of pumping (drawdown) to ensure that the water level does not fall below that needed to operate the pump. A preliminary test is done before installing a screen in the water bore. After developing the well another pump test will be done to determine the yield from the bore.
